By Rubén Morales Iglesias:

After 23 residents of Red Bank village in the Stann Creek District were left homeless due to a fire that razed their homes to the ground on Tuesday evening, different organizations, a government ministry, and individual people answered the call for assistance immediately.

Among the people calling for help were Minister Rodwell Ferguson, Basilio Mes, and Kenny Call from KC Bus Line.

On Wednesday, Minister Ferguson thanked those who responded immediately. Ferguson visited the affected families in Red Bank on Wednesday morning after launching a social media appeal for help.

“When there is a disaster, it is expected that other people will want to assist,” he wrote on social media.

“I launched the appeal this morning for help and I can tell you the assistance keeps coming in. I want to say a heartfelt thanks to those who contributed so far. There are others who are doing their own things.

“Special thanks to the following: The Ministry of Human Dev. for contributing five thousand dollars ($5,000.00), NEMO for donating mattresses, clothing, and food. Lupita Melendez for donating food and clothing, Lorena Miranda for donating clothing,” he wrote saying he donated food items as well.

“Today was not a birding day for our Red Bank Junior Birding Club but a day of learning to be generous,” posted Red Bank birder Celso Sho on social media.

“I was happy that they were able to come together to make a little contribution to the families who lost their homes to fire yesterday. Every little contribution goes a long way. Thanks to all those who are making the effort to assist.”

“Thanks to Southern Emergency Services for delivering items to the homeless families that lost their homes to fire yesterday,” wrote Celso Sho in a different post.

“Thanks also to Minister Rodwell Ferguson Sr. for launching the appeal for assistance to the public. Also, to Charles B Leslie Jr for assisting in getting items to the victims. The people of Red Bank are also showing a lot of love by contributing whatever they can. Thanks to families, friends and every other individual who assisted (and will continue to assist) the affected families. If you haven’t contributed and would like to, I believe it will be appreciated more than you can imagine.”

Cal also expressed appreciation for the mattresses.
