Belize seeking help from US Drug Enforcement Agency to deal with drug plane landings

Posted: Friday, February 25, 2022. 8:42 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Notwithstanding the cooperation of locals with foreigners moving drugs through Belize, the Police Department is extending the hand of cooperation to its own international partners.

The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), which has long maintained a presence here, is being asked to assist with clearing the way to sealing off remote areas of Toledo from drug operations, such as Graham Creek, Dolores, and Crique Sarco, said Commissioner of Police Chester Williams this week: “We are working with our US counterpart, the DEA, to see what we can do to address the challenges that we are currently facing in the Toledo district. Graham Creek, Dolores, Crique Sarco, these are the challenging areas for us and so we are working to see what we can do to enhance our presence and response in that area and I believe that pretty soon we should be able to have something in place to be able to counter them when it comes to that location hereafter.”

But Commissioner Williams also concedes that the key to stopping the trade is reducing local involvement, lured as they are by its lucrative nature: “Certainly, the local people are the ones who know our terrain. They know the ins and outs of those areas. The Mexican cartel who would normally come would not be acquainted with our terrain or acquainted with how to maneuver our jungles so they do rely on our local people who are from the particular areas to help them in that regard so certainly, they’re not only clearing space but they’re also involved in the movement of these drugs.”

And the ComPol is keeping an eagle eye on his men to root out supposed “cartel cops:” “Well we, like I’ve always said, we’re not going to shy away from the fact that we certainly do understand that there are police officers who work with these cartels but when they manifest themselves then we deal with them. At this time, we have nothing to suggest that police officers are involved in these two latest landings and if it is that later on something should come up to suggest that then we do our investigation and move from there.”
