Unless they falter, Verdes are heading to the Concacaf League

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize champions of the Opening and Closing Championships get to represent Belize in the Concacaf League. Right now, unless they falter, Verdes seem the sure bet for that ticket.

As the norm dictates, if a team wins both opening and closing championships, that team is the outright representative. In case there are two different champions, the cumulative regular-season points determine the representative. This time around there are no playoffs, so that makes everything easier.

At this point, Verdes sport an enviable cumulative of 37 points, eleven points more than Altitude who have 26. The San Pedro Pirates follow with 24.

Garden City with 14, Wagiya with seven, and Caesar Ridge with 2 are out of the running.

With seven games left for everyone, Verdes could very well secure the cumulative table by the first weekend of March should they win their next two encounters, and Altitude and the Pirates lose their next two games. They would then only have to win the Closing Championship to secure the Concacaf berth.

However, Altitude and San Pedro can stretch the competition for the Concacaf berth a bit longer or even hope to knock the Green Machine out of the top spot, but they would both have to win every remaining game and Verdes fall into a losing streak.

Somehow, that looks very improbable.
