Iceland becomes the latest country to lift COVID-19 restrictions

Posted: Sunday, February 27, 2022. 2:18 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Iceland has joined a growing number of European countries that have decided to lift COVID-19 restrictions for its people, according to Reuters.

As of Friday, February 25, Iceland rolled back the remainder of its restrictions that were still in place which included, the limitation of indoor gatherings to 200 people, and the restriction placed on the opening hours for bars. All border restrictions were also lifted.

“Widespread societal resistance to COVID-19 is the main route out of the epidemic,” Iceland’s Health Ministry said in a recent statement.

“To achieve this, as many people as possible need to be infected with the virus as the vaccines are not enough, even though they provide good protection against serious illness,” it added.

Iceland has a population of 368,000 people, less than Belize’s 412,000 estimated by the United Nations, but has recorded new daily covid cases of over 2,800 daily.

The country has also confirmed more than 115,000 total infections. Despite the high number of infections, Iceland has only recorded 60 deaths connected to the virus.
