Russia places nuclear arms on high alert in response to comments by world leaders about supporting Ukraine

Posted: Sunday, February 27, 2022. 2:03 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: CNN reports that Russia’s deterrence force, which includes its nuclear arms, have been put on high alert by President Vladimir Putin.

Putin, in a recent televised meeting, gave the order to his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov.

“Top officials in leading NATO countries have allowed themselves to make aggressive comments about our country, therefore I hereby order the minister of Defense and the chief of the General Staff [of the RF Armed Forces] to place the Russian Army Deterrence Force on combat alert,” Putin said.

The Russian state-owned news agency Novosti, quoted the Russian Ministry of Defense as saying that the strategic forces “are designed to deter aggression against Russia and its allies, as well as to defeat the aggressor (inflicting defeat on him), including in a war with the use of nuclear weapons.”

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week, Putin raised the concern among world leaders about his willingness to utilize nuclear weaponry when he vowed any retaliation against Russia for the invasion would “lead to the consequences you have never seen in history.”

The Associated Press reports that on Thursday, Putin also reminded that, even after the dissolution of the USSR and losing a significant portion of its nuclear capabilities Russia “remains one of the most powerful nuclear states.”

Thus far, the majority of countries that have taken a stance against Russia have imposed economic sanctions.
