Verdes beat San Pedro 1-0, stay at the top of FFB Top League

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: National football champions Verdes struggled but managed to defeat the San Pedro Pirates 1-0 at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.

Mexican Juan Carlos “Chino” López nailed a wicked backward header to the far post off a corner kick by Colombian Camilo Márquez in the 16’. San Pedro goalkeeper was left standing and shocked by López’s header which ricocheted off the post and landed inside. That was the most decisive play of the very tight and competitive game.

The win gives the Green Machine the sole custody of the top spot with 12 points from four consecutive victories. The champs are in perfect run one game shy of completing the first round of the FFB Top League’s Closing Championship.

San Pedro stay at nine points but can be surpassed by Altitude should the Placencia-side beat Wagiya today. Though both clubs would be tied at nine points, Altitude have a better goal average. The San Pedro Pirates have only scored three goals and allowed one while Altitude have so far hit the net four times allowing one goal.

Two games play at 3:30 pm today Sunday. Wagiya host Altitude in the Battle of the South at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga while Caesar Ridge do likewise with Belmopan’s Garden City.
