By Benjamin Flowers: Germany has taken nearly 40 countries off of its COVID-19 high-risk list, and Belize is one of them, according to the European news publisher, The Local.
The move announced by the German government will make returning to Germany from these countries notably easier for many travelers.
The German government lifted restrictions for countries from within and outside the European Union. EU countries taken off the list are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Croatia, Luxembourg, Poland, Sweden, Hungary.
Overseas territories of France have also been taken off the list. These are: Guadeloupe, St. Barthélemy, St. Martin – as well as the following overseas territories of the Netherlands: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Martin have also been removed.
Countries from outside the EU that have been removed from the risk list are: Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Belize, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Ecuador, Grenada, Guyana, Iraq, Kosovo, Madagascar, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Moldova, Saint Lucia, San Marino, Serbia, Seychelles, Suriname, and Ukraine.
Removing the countries from the high-risk list comes as a part of a larger move to roll back COVID-19 restrictions on a whole. The German government also recently announced plans to further roll back COVID restrictions as of March 4, which will see a reclassification of countries as “high-risk areas” so that only countries with“stronger pathogenic properties” than the Omicron variant, appear as high-risk.
The updated restrictions will also allow for children under the age of 12 to avoid quarantine immediately after testing negative for COVID-19.
The rolling back of COVID restrictions is a growing trend in Europe, with Iceland being among the latest countries to update its regulations, get rid of limitations on social gatherings, and lift restrictions on opening hours for bars. (See full story here).
