By BBN Staff: Edward Saldano who escaped police custody while at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on February 9 is still at large and the Belize Police Department has issued a stern warning to family members that may be helping him evade capture.

Saldano who was on remand since September 2021 for a number of offences, was brought down for his court appearance on February 9, and was denied bail a second time. After the announcement, he asked to use the bathroom and used the opportunity to escape from the police.

Today, Communications Director for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, said that the department believes he is receiving assistance from family members to be able to remain on the run for this long.

“We’re hoping that these persons know that to harbour a fugitive is also an offense and we are seeing cases where mothers, wives, uncles, have been sent to prison for harboring fugitives and criminal elements. So if these people know what is best for themselves, they would advise him to turn himself in,” Yearwood said.

Prior to his escape, Saldano was to be sent back to prison until April 7.

Police are asking the assistance of the public in locating the fugitive.
