By Aaron Humes: There was a formal inauguration of the reconstructed Roaring Creek Bridge and the slightly over 20-mile stretch of the George Price Highway linking it with Belmopan and eight western communities to the Twin Towns at Santa Elena.
The project, commenced under the Dean Barrow administration, was opened by Prime Minister John Briceño; Ramiro López Ghio, country representative for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB); and Marianne Van Steen, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Belize, confirming the upgrade of one of the poorer stretches of road in Belize to one of its best, while reducing transport costs, and the road’s vulnerability to flooding and other natural disasters, making it more resilient to climate change. The new bridge carries two lanes of vehicular traffic and pedestrian paths and rises 12 feet above the narrower previous structure.
Speakers noted the importance of connectivity, with the Prime Minister noting, “As Belize starts to strengthen its ties with Central America, including Guatemala, our neighbor, this highway is going to be playing an even more critical role in facilitating trade from one country to the next.”
Ramiro López Ghio said, “The rehabilitation of this important highway is a relevant achievement for the people of Belize, since it improves regional integration, enables sustainable and inclusive economic growth, facilitates gender equality and diversity, and strengthens in the best ways possible, important aspects of Climate Change resilience, as it is envisioned in the Inter-American Development Bank’s Vision 2025.”
And Ambassador Van Steen noted that just as the bridge and highway connect people and places, its construction “has brought closer together the Government of Belize, the Inter-American Development Bank and the European Union for a strengthened partnership and stronger friendships.”
The project was funded by the Government of Belize, the IDB, and the EU through the Caribbean Investment Facility.
