Man remanded to prison for firing a gun in public

By BBN Staff: Twenty-two-year-old Erwin Troy Hamilton, finds himself behind bars at the Belize Central Prison tonight, after being charged for firing a gun in public.

Hamilton appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, unrepresented, charged with discharging a firearm in public, and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Since the offense was committed with a firearm, he could not receive bail at the Magistrate level and was remanded until April 29.

Allegations against him are that on Thursday, February 24, he was at the corner of Central American Boulevard and Matura Street, where he pulled out a gun and opened fire upon two men who were exiting a yard. Police in the area immediately responded to the sound of the gunshot, and one officer said he positively identified Hamilton as the man fleeing the scene following the shooting.

He was picked up by police on the same day, shortly after the incident.
