By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise Jose Abelardo on Monday hosted the United Nations’ (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Country Representative Crispim Moreira and discussed assistance projects.

Moreira, who resides in Jamaica is on a week-long working visit to Belize from February 28 to March 4. He is country representative to the Bahamas, Belize, and Jamaica.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE), Moreira will meet with key officials from several ministries, including from the Ministry of Human Development, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Defence.

He is looking at the progress of current FAO projects and preparations for the upcoming FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean scheduled for this year in Quito, Ecuador.

MAFSE said the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization provides assistance to countries mainly through one of two mechanisms: Technical Co-operation Projects (TCP) and the Technical Co-operation Programme Facility (TCPF).

MAFSE said the Technical Co-operation “address specific technical gaps that constrain productivity in agriculture, nutrition, fisheries, and forestry. They provide expert assistance” while the Technical Co-operation Programme Facility (TCPF) encompasses “a smaller-scale assistance that can provide a quick response to help develop projects in the country”.

According to MAFSE, FAO is charged with supporting national efforts to promote food security and sustainable development.

“FAO’s work with the governments of the represented countries focuses on strengthening national food and nutrition security while targeting efforts to improve the productivity and overall performance of the agricultural sector,” said MAFSE.

“By supporting sustainable rural livelihoods and increasing resilience to natural disasters, FAO recognizes the importance of this sector for reducing poverty and hunger.”
