World Taekwondo withdraws honourary black belt given to Russian President Vladimir Putin

Posted: Tuesday, March 1, 2022. 12:53 pm CST.

By Ruben Morales Iglesias: World Taekwondo said it was withdrawing the honourary 9th dan black belt it gave to Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2013.

“World Taekwondo strongly condemns the brutal attacks on innocent lives in Ukraine, which go against the World Taekwondo vision of “Peace is More Precious than Triumph” and the World Taekwondo values of respect and tolerance,” said the governing body of taekwondo.

Like FIFA had done before moving to a complete ban of Russian participation in international football including the World Cup, World Taekwondo said that in solidarity with the International Olympic Committee, Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be allowed to display their flags, or their anthems played at their events and that it would not organize or recognize events in any of the two countries.

“World Taekwondo’s thoughts are with the people of Ukraine and we hope for a peaceful and immediate end to this war,” said World Taekwondo.

Prior to the World Taekwondo decision, the International Judo Federation removed Putin as honourary president.
