By BBN Staff: Jose Orellana, who was charged with firing eight shots from a rifle at one of his coworkers, pleaded guilty in court today to the charge of use of deadly means of harm with intent to cause grievous harm. Orellano, however, will have to wait for his sentence.
Supreme Court Justice Ricardo O’Neal Sandcroft, deferred Orellana’s sentence, until March 30. This is to give Justice Sandcroft time to read the victim’s impact statement which will be taken into consideration when deciding on the sentence. The prosecution is reportedly satisfied with a non-custodial sentence.
Allegations against him are that on August 11, 2019, Orellana and Ricardo Mendoza were both security guards at Long Caye, when Orellana came in an alleged drunken state and fired the shots at Mendoza.
Mendoza escaped and jumped into the sea, but Orellana followed him in a boat and pulled him into the vessel. Personnel from the Belize Coast Guard who responded to the sound of gunfire arrived moments later and took control of the situation.
