Men charged with Hattieville home invasion remanded to prison

By BBN Staff: Two men from Bullet Tree Falls who are accused of committing a home invasion in Hattieville Village will be spending their time in the Belize Central Prison until their attorney can secure bail for them.

Angel Daniel Mayen, 23, and Charlie Martinez, 34, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court along with their attorney Rachel Montejo to answer to one count of wounding upon Theadore Gabourel Jr., and one count of aggravated burglary.

They pleaded not guilty to both charges. As the alleged offenses were committed with a firearm, they could not receive bail at the Magistrate level and were remanded to prison. However, they have the option to apply to the Supreme Court for bail.

The allegations against them are that just after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 27, they broke into Gabourel’s home, tied up him and his family, then stole five USD$20.00 bills, two USD$10.00 bills, $2,000 in different denominations, an assortment of jewelry valued at $10,000. The two are also accused of stealing a grey 2014 Toyota Hilux valued at $88,000. The value of all the goods stolen is $101,040.00.

They also allegedly injured Gabourel during the commission of the burglary.

The duo are due back in court on April 28, 2022.
