By Aaron Humes: Musician and bandleader extraordinaire Gerald “Lord” Rhaburn is celebrating 86 years of life today, having been born on March 3, 1936.
Rhaburn is an indelible force and presence in Belizean music. His Lord Rhaburn Combo, formed on August 6, 1959, rose to become the preeminent band in Belize in the 1970s and 1980s, performing calypso, soca, reggae, and brukdown music mostly composed by Rhaburn.
According to the House of Culture, Rhaburn succeeded in doing what the politicians didn’t – capturing hearts in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and indeed elsewhere around the world as the first of its kind musical ambassador, marked by showmanship, sharp dress, and musical flair.
“From I started my career, I have been doing things behind the scenes for my people and country. I was the first person who entertained the first set of tourists that land at the airport in Belize; the first set of tourists who came by barge from the ship, of course, we nuh have the growth we have now. I believe that in life when you give you will receive back,” he once said.
And he has received numerous awards and recognition for his work and an MBE.
So as he himself wrote in 1981 – we unequivocally claim this “true-born Belizean” – “tell dehn dat you bahn deh!”
