By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Orange Walk farmers from the San Carlos village area received cold storage training for their vegetables.
The training conducted on Wednesday at San Carlos was a joint effort by the Orange Walk Agriculture Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE), the Cooperatives Department, and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The training comes after the acquisition of four cold storage units by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise through JICA for farmers in productive zones in Belize like San Carlos.
The San Carlos New River Farmers Cooperative will now benefit from the use of one of the cold storage units when it’s installed.
MAFSE said they also visited existing storage facilities in nearby Indian Creek, a Mennonite community located next to San Carlos.
The cold storage training will also be conducted for farmers in Cayo, Belize, and Corozal, where the first storage facilities will be installed, to assist in the post-harvest management of cash crops like onions and potatoes.
