Belikin Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is off

Posted: Friday, March 4, 2022. 8:08 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The four-day, four-stage Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge started on Friday morning at 7:00 under the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio.

Last time out in 2020, the winner were Team CORE made up of Amado Cruz, Jerry Cante, and Daniel Cruz. The trio completed the most demanding BeliE Canoe Race in 18 hours, ten minutes, and 19.36 seconds.

Forty-six teams are competing in the 175-mile race which is staged through four days finishing on Monday past the Belcan Bridge in Belize City.

The race which dates back to 1998 (Read Richard Harrison’s account of how the Ruta Maya race came to be here.) returns after a one-year forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today’s first stage goes from the Hawksworth Bridge to Banana Bank.

Stage 2 will head from Banana Bank to Double Head Cabbage on Saturday, March 5.

On Sunday, March 6, the Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge goes from Double Head Cabbage to Henderson Bank in Burrell Boom.

The last stage will be on Monday, March 7, from Burrell Boom to Belize City finishing by the Belize City Centre.
