By BBN Staff: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is appealing to the public to make use of the Crime Stoppers hotline, to share important information with law enforcement about crimes that either have been committed or may be committed.
Williams was speaking after a recent trip to Guatemala to attend a meeting of Crime Stoppers International, to get a better understanding of how Crime Stoppers works in Latin America. He said that there were several topics of discussion such as illegal drug trade, child pornography, homicides, and other types of violent crimes, and they looked at how regular citizens can benefit from the anonymity of using crime stoppers.
He called on the public to utilize the service to report it if they know of someone with an illegal firearm, or someone planning to commit a crime and noted that those who give such information do get a stipend for doing so if the information leads to some form of police action.
“Some might look at it and say that you are snitching but it is not about snitching it’s about playing your role as a citizen in your own security,” Williams said. “Because at the end of the day if you know of an illegal firearm and you leave it in the hands of a criminal, you may likely become the victim of that firearm.”
