Drug traffickers managed to escape by sea with cargo; narco plane left intact

By BBN Staff: A team of narco-traffickers set traps on the road to hinder police today, buying themselves enough time to load up their cargo and escape by sea.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams explained that authorities were monitoring the aircraft early this morning, as it went into Mexican airspace, before making a turn and coming back into Belize, eventually landing on a small island in the Monkey River area of southern Belize.

Police had a four-man team some 10 miles from the area that was responding; however, the drug traffickers rigged the road with spikes that caused heavy damage to the police vehicle and slowed their approach. The officers pressed forward and arrived at a lagoon that was impassable without a boat, and radioed for assistance from the Belize Coast Guard.

Williams said that police got air support from Mexican authorities, who relayed that the traffickers were loading the cargo of the aircraft onto All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV)s and taking them to nearby boats that were then loaded up and escaped with the drugs. They fled leaving the aircraft and ATVs behind.

”Ths is one of the rare occasions where the plane is not destroyed. It is still in tact but getting it out of that area may pose some significant challenges because the area is soft and we can see where the plane appeared to be stuck,” Williams said.

He went on to say that authorities alerted their Mexican counterparts to be on the lookout for the boats. This is the third drug plane landing since February 22, and Williams said police are concerned that the upcoming dry season will give the narco-traffickers more options for landing spaces, which will increase the number of such planes coming into Belize.
