Police officers and civilians who shot guns near resort housing regional leaders said they were just testing out their weapons

By BBN Staff: Two police officers and a civilian are facing the consequences after discharging their firearms while at sea near the resort where high-level regional meetings were being held this week.

Police Commissioner Chester Williams confirmed that around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, officers in San Pedro Ambergris Caye, in the vicinity of the resort where leaders of the Caribbean Community were gathered for the 33rd Intersessional Meeting of CARICOM, responded to the sound of gunfire.

They saw a vessel coming from the direction and conducted a stop and search. On the boat, they found Police Sergeant Pop, and Police Constable Kingston, along with a civilian businessman.

The men admitted to firing their weapons but claimed that they were just testing them out.

“But I don’t understand why they would go and test fire weapons in an area like that which they know was sterile because these officers were also involved in the security of this summit,” Williams said.

They were arrested and charged. Upon arraignment, they all pleaded not guilty and were remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
