By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative Dr. Crispim Moreira met with Green Climate Fund’s (GCF) National Designated Authority (NDA) Dr. Osmond Martinez at the Edward Laing Building in Belize City on Wednesday.

Martinez, who is the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment was joined by Leroy Martinez, economist/GCF focal point, in the meeting with Dr. Moreira, who is FAO Representative for Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Belize.

Moreira, who resides in Jamaica is on a week-long working visit to Belize from February 28 to March 4. He expressed FAO’s commitment to continue its work in Belize.

The Ministry of Economic Development (MED) said the meeting objective was “update and discuss current and potential project/programme alignment to FAO Medium Term Plan 2022-2025”.

The MED said the discussion included the FAO Country Programming Framework, The Horizon 2030, and the Fisheries and Coastal National Adaptation Plan of BZD 1.2 million grant which was recently approved by Green Climate Fund (GCF)”.

CEO Dr. Martinez reiterated that the priorities of the Government of Belize are the increase of economic activity, the reduction of poverty, and environmental sustainability.

“Over the past 15 years, FAO has consistently aided Belize in several areas including policy advice, advocacy, and capacity building as well as emergency assistance and resource mobilization for the food and agriculture sector,” said the MED.

“More recently, resilience building and expansion of market access have become important features of cooperation. FAO’s support continues to be instrumental today, particularly in view of the country’s commitment to achieving food security and rural development.”

Present at the meeting were also personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise with whom Moreira had already met earlier in the week.
