By Aaron Humes: We will try to confirm later on, but according to Channel 7 News, prices of diesel fuel are believed to have gone up again at midnight this morning.
And the pain will be steep, because even though the government did not announce it, diesel is believed to be costing 48 cents more per gallon in Belize City and 50 cents more in rural areas, lifting the price to $12.54.
It comes on the heels of an increase announced earlier this week by Minister of Finance John Briceno, where diesel increased from $11.70 to $12.06 – an increase of 36 cents. Briceno said it would have been more if Government had not absorbed at least half the increase, at a cost of $1.5 million. He warned that such absorptions are not sustainable at the moment due to the Government’s need for tax revenue.
While the Government has promised relief in the medium to long term, in the short term we can expect more pain both in gas and food prices due to rising oil prices caused by the war in Ukraine.
