By Benjamin Flowers: As much as 17 people have been reported dead and around 22 people have reportedly been injured following a brawl that erupted at a football match in Mexico on Saturday night, reports the UK Mirror.

The teams Queretaro and Atlas were facing off at Queretaro’s Estadio Corregidora when the fan violence broke out some 62 minutes into the game. The brawl ended up spilling onto the field with some players leaving and others staying in an attempt to assist with easing the tensions.

In the aftermath of the brawl, the football clubs of both teams, the owners of the stadium, and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF for its acronym in Spanish), all issued statements condemning acts of violence of all kinds in the sport of football.

“Football must be a space of healthy coexistence where any type of violence is inadmissible,” the FMF said. “The FMF will monitor and assist in the investigation process with the corresponding instances so that those responsible are sanctioned in an exemplary manner.”

Liga MX, the top professional football division of the Mexican football league system, also said that an investigation will be launched into breakdowns in security at the stadium and that any such breakdowns discovered would be punished in an “exemplary manner.”
