By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño’s run of international engagements continues on from last week’s CARICOM Intersessional Meeting and CARICOM-SICA Summit with a five-day state visit to the Republic of China starting on Tuesday their time, as reported by Focus Taiwan/CNA English News.
The Prime Minister will be joined by Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration Minister Eamon Courtenay, and Education, Culture, Science and Technology Minister Francis Fonseca, as well as, we have confirmed, Agriculture Minister Jose Mai.
Belize is one of the 14 diplomatic allies Taiwan has remaining around the world. The two countries have maintained official diplomatic ties since 1989.
In recognition of those ties, President Tsai Ing-wen will confer on the prime minister the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon for his role in enhancing ties between Taiwan and Belize.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Tsai, her vice-president Lai Ching-te; Premier Su Tseng-chang and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu. On his agenda include receiving an honorary doctorate from Tainan-based Kun Shan University, participating in a Belize business opportunity forum and meeting with Belizean students in Taiwan.
The visit will be Briceño’s first trip to Taiwan in 16 years and the first time he visits the country as prime minister, a post he took up in November 2020, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
