Prime Minister reiterates “best interest” of Belize following Judge’s ruling on Government’s Microsoft contract with SMART

Posted: Monday, March 7, 2022. 8:59 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: While the Supreme Court made clear that the Government had erred in its handling of the Microsoft 365 license renewal process, in which Speednet Communications Limited won over rivals Belize Telemedia Limited and others, it declined to cancel the contract.

Prime Minister John Briceno, appending personal comments to a social media post on the Government’s release noting the decision, stated, “Our Administration and I had committed to doing things that are in the best interest of positive nation-building and protection of government resources. The judgment handed down by Justice Sonya Young is vindication that we acted prudently and with rationality. Our government greets this ruling with a sense of justification and we assert that we will continue to make decisions with the best interest of Belize at heart.”

The Opposition – Senator Michael Peyrefitte who brought the case and Senior Counsel and former Prime Minister Dean Barrow who pressed it – beg to differ.

They told Channel 7 News that in the judge’s discretion, canceling would have done more harm than good and caused additional expenses for the Government. But they feel just as vindicated by the decision because of the sharp rap on the knuckles Belmopan received.

And according to Peyrefitte, his vigilance against Government excess will continue, and may involve appealing this decision after a review.
