The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) is working closely with the Belize City Council in ensuring the ‘Mek Wi Plant’ Urban Gardening Pilot Project is a success.

MAFSE is already involved in promoting urban gardening in Belize City at the HUB off Lake Independence Boulevard and with the Days of Healing Youth Organization on Vernon Street.

Last Friday, MAFSE Minister Jose Abelardo Mai was updated on the progress of the Urban Gardening Pilot Project headed by Councillor Natasha Pipersburgh in the Police Street vicinity.

Minister Mai visited Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner at the Belize City Hall “to discuss bringing back agriculture into each of the ten constituencies across Belize City through the introduction of the ‘Mek Wi Plant’ Urban Gardening Strategic Concept”.

“This concept is envisioned to encourage community engagement, economic independence, and community development through the integration of a series of greenhouses in various locations across the city,” said the Belize City Council in a press release posted on social media.

The Belize City Council said Minister Mai promised to continue supporting the Belize City Council in its drive to get the citizens of the country’s main city to appreciate the food we eat. The idea is that they get involved in planting through the reintroduction of small-scale agricultural practices within the city.

“The intent is to train, and then enable community members to grow produce within the greenhouse structures with the support and technical assistance of the Belize City Council and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise.”

“Mayor Wagner utilized today’s opportunity to thank Minister Mai for his dedication to wholeheartedly support the agricultural initiatives to be undertaken by the Belize City Council through the work of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise,” concluded the Belize City Council.
