Police officer charged and remanded to prison for firing high-powered rifle in public

Posted: Tuesday, March 8, 2022. 8:47 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: An officer of the Belize Police Department has found himself on the wrong side of the law, after firing a high-powered rifle in public while he was on duty.

Police Constable Jose Mendez Jr., 34, was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, charged with discharging his firearm in a public place. Due to the nature of the offense, he could not be offered bail at the Magistrate level and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 20, when he is to be given disclosure on his case.

While Mendez was unrepresented in court today, Mendez said that he does have legal representation and that his lawyer will be seeking bail for him at the Supreme Court level.

The Department has placed him on interdiction with half pay for the duration of the court proceedings.

The allegation against Mendez is that on Sunday, March 6, he was on patrol in Belize City and fired his service .223 rifle while on Tibruce Street.
