Facebook gangsters arrested over social media video; others wanted

By BBN Staff: Two Belize City men have been charged with two gang-related offenses, as the Belize Police Department’s crackdown on gang activity continues.

Yesterday, 23-year-old Julius Anthony Dawson and 24-year-old George Godfrey Lewis were charged with “producing a video recording to promote gang-related activity,” and “being a member of a gang.”

After reviewing the content of the video, police said that they have identified several others in the video and are seeking to arrest and charge them as well.

Following a spike in gang violence in late January and early February, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that the department would be aggressively tackling the issue of gang activity to ensure that citizens of Belize City do not have to live in fear.

Williams, known for taking a community approach to dealing with gangs, has refused to attend mediation sessions, sending a firm warning to gang members that he is beyond words in dealing with them.

Since then there have been numerous arrests for gang affiliation, and all of those who are facing such charges were remanded to the Belize Central Prison.
