By Aaron Humes: According to Shawn Vargas, Director of the Department of Human Services, its officers are presently looking into a report that a child was filmed being directed to drink “BADMAN (rum)”.

Allegedly the child was being encouraged by his father.

The source of the videos said it would make them available to police and Vargas told us police should investigate alongside them.

Vargas informed that the Department’s officer on call is searching for the location of the child and is working with police. As part of their investigations, he said, they have the power to remove the child although this would be a last resort.

“That is grounds for removal; it’s not a part of the Belizean culture to give our children alcohol. That’s not part of our culture,” Vargas said in response to what is the legal background of parents sharing alcoholic beverages with minors. The Department will look at whether the child is in danger as a result of his father’s alleged actions alongside any criminal charge he might face.
