National Drug Abuse Control Council condemns video of child being directed to drink alcoholic substance

By Benjamin Flowers: Public condemnation continues to grow over a video circulating on social media showing a child consuming an alcoholic beverage given to him by an adult, and now the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC) has publicly condemned the act.

“The action shown in the video displays a form of child abuse. This goes against our core value as a society to protect the moral and health wellbeing of our children and highlights unacceptable practices that exist within our society that encourage substance misuse among children,” the NDACC said in a statement issued this evening.

The NDACC also said that the Ministry of Health and Wellness and the council works on a daily basis to safeguard the population, particularly children, from substance use and abuse, through a number of means including substance misuse prevention programs, in and outside of schools, community empowerment initiatives, public education as well as outreach services.

The NDACC has called on relevant authorities to take action against those who have endangered the child in the video and any other child.

Earlier today, the Department of Human Services also responded to the incident, saying that its officers are presently looking into a report that a child was filmed being directed to drink “BADMAN (rum),” allegedly being encouraged by his father.
