BREAKING: Janelle Chanona replaces Osmany Salas as the NGO (13th) Senator

Posted: Friday, March 11, 2022. 2:09 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Breaking Belize News understands that at a vote held today, Vice President of OCEANA Belize Janelle Chanona defeated Dr. Sharmayne Saunders to be named a Senator representing the non-governmental organization community.

Chanona is a former journalist who succeeded Audrey Matura as local head of OCEANA in January of 2014. She has been active in the dialog to reform legislation and practice in the fishing and petroleum industry and conservation of protected areas.

Chanona will meet with the press later on and we will have her comments for you.

She replaces Osmany Salas who stepped down at the last meeting of the Senate to take up a post with the World Wildlife Fund.

She also becomes the latest woman to join the Senate on being sworn in – second for crossbench senators joining Elena Smith and fifth overall along with Isabel Bennett and Erica Jang for the Government and Sheena Pitts for the Opposition (although there has been some rotation due to their internal turmoil).
