Cayo police officers honored for saving woman whose vehicle plunged into the Mopan River

By BBN Staff: On February 8, officers of the Belize Police Department attached to the Western Formation got a call that a woman’s vehicle had plunged into the Mopan River near Benque Viejo and she was in danger of drowning. Four police officers responded to that call and managed to pull the woman out of the rapidly-flowing river and take her to safety.

Today, those four officers, Corporal 1321 Terry Reyes, Corporal 156 Sydney Augustine, Constable 1466 Dervin Garcia, and Constable 2021 Fernando Chun, were recognized for heroism in the line of duty.

Officer Commanding the Western Police Formation Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett, issued the certificates of commendation to the officers this evening, thanking them for their exemplary work.

“With little regard for their own safety, they all started the rescue mission. In the end, the woman was safely rescued and her vehicle later retrieved from the river. To all of you I say thank you for an extraordinary job,” Gillett said.
