By Aaron Humes: Police in Belize City managed to successfully detain a man wanted for murder and recovered a loaded .45 caliber pistol, despite coming under attack from “a mob,” according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams.
Video has been circulating of the incident, which the Commissioner described as a routine search for a fugitive.
Officers saw the wanted man and a second person apparently throwing away what appeared to be a firearm.
“The police quickly reacted as they came under attack by a mob who were threatening them and in one instance a male person advanced toward the police. The police responded by firing a shot at him with a rubber bullet to neutralize the threat,” Williams explained.
They then detained the two accused and recovered the firearm, which carried six live rounds of ammunition. Except for the person shot as he was advancing toward police, no one else appeared to be injured.
“As we witness the difficult circumstances under which the police must work and the kind of people we must deal with, I call upon our citizens to be patient and supportive of our efforts as we try our best to ensure your safety. We cannot allow a [handful of criminals] to hold us hostage in our community. Together let’s work to keep our community free from the scourge of crime,” he concluded.
As is common in these types of cases, there is no indication if there will be any review of the officers’ work to see that it went by the book.
