Marble contest being held today in Belize City

By Aaron Humes: A contest is being held to restore a lost art in Belize – the game of marbles.

March is the time of year when kites fly, breezes blow and thoughts begin to turn toward days of sunshine and roses – and when a simple game captures the imagination.

Organizer Shane Williams, promoting the contest, recalled in a social media post, “Who is the pixiest youth in the neighborhood? I remember we used to know this off the top of our heads back in the days. This was the real beef between crews. If you heard there was someone pixier than your top marksman, the crew would walk across the city to go shut down that rumor.”

And while so many of our youth have been insulated due to digital development, there remains, at least from the public commentary, a healthy interest in the game.

The venue will be the “Dubu Field” next to Racoon Street Police Station, moved from the smaller Triangle Park on Neal Pen Road. Registration is free. Marbles will be provided. Snacks and refreshments will be provided to all.
