Man charged with illegal guns and ammunition claims police abused the process to charge him

By BBN Staff: A 21-year-old Belize City resident charged for illegal guns and ammunition says that the Belize Police Department went against the legal process of filing charges against an accused to get him before the court.

Chervin Tench was arraigned at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, charged with two counts of kept firearm without a license and two counts of kept ammunition without a license. In court, he pleaded not guilty and explained to the Magistrate that police were supposed to bring charges within 48 hours of detaining him but did not do so until 36 hours.

He also claimed that he wasn’t sure how many charges should be read to him because he refused to accept the charge sheet after the designated time had passed and told police to send them to his attorney while he was in custody. The court then took a break while the prosecutor spoke with Tench’s attorney, Ronelle Gonzales, who confirmed that the charges read to him in court were correct.

Given the nature of the offenses, Tench was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until May 9.
