By Aaron Humes: Unofficially, there have been 25 murders so far for the year 2022 – 13 confirmed in January, eight in February, and four so far in March, according to the Belize Crime Observatory (BCO).
The BCO’s data puts the count through the end of February at 21, up nine from last year’s mark of 12.
14 of these occurred in the Belize District; five in the Stann Creek District; and two in the other districts combined.
There have been six total arrests for the confirmed murder incidents in the first two months of the year, compared to two for 12 last year.
A total of 40 shooting incidents have been reported countrywide – 27 in the Belize District, five each in Orange Walk and Stann Creek, two in Corozal, and one elsewhere.
In all, major crime is up slightly through the end of February, from 125 last year to 141 so far this year. That includes 70 incidents of burglary and 25 incidents of robbery, respectively up one and down one compared to 2021.
Police have also made 137 drug-related arrests, mostly for cocaine and cannabis.
