Investigations underway to determine the cause of Jasmine Street house fire

By BBN Staff: Authorities are looking into the cause of a house fire that occurred on Jasmine Street, Belize City, over the weekend.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, who heads communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, said that officers responded to a call around 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, where they found personnel from the Belize National Fire Service, fighting to extinguish the blaze.

They managed to extinguish the fire; however, the contents of the house were completely destroyed.

Authorities interviewed the resident, Deseree Hamilton, 37, who said she was in her room when she smelled smoke and upon investigation, realized that the house was on fire.

“The estimated cost of damages is not known to us as yet and the fire department is leading this investigation to determine whether or not it was caused by an accelerant or something,” Yearwood said.
