Police van catches fire, prisoners still make it to court

Posted: Monday, March 14, 2022. 7:19 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A police van making a return trip from the Belize Central Prison burst into flames this morning on its way to Belize City.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, said that the van was traveling in the Tropical Park area of Hattieville, transporting five prisoners along with police personnel.

Around 8:20 a.m. the driver noticed flames coming from the hood of the vehicle and made an immediate stop, allowing the occupants to get off.

Shortly after, the fire got worse, extensively damaging the vehicle. The prisoners were placed in another police van which was in the area, and taken to their destination, while investigators went to the scene to determine what caused the fire.

The results of the investigation have yet to be released.
