Belize Defence Force officers receive counseling training

Posted: Tuesday, March 15, 2022. 12:33 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Thirty-two members of the Belize Defence Force have received training to become peer counselors to their fellow officers.

The Peer Helper Course, which was held at the Price Barracks in Ladyville between February 14-25, was the first of its kind to be held by the BDF.

Participants were trained in identifying various signs that indicate an office is in need of mental health support, how to provide basic counseling support, and how to refer an officer to a relevant entity if they are in need of more professional assistance.

“Henceforth, these individuals will be returning to their units in the same role they were before, however, they will be well equipped to identify warning signs from their peers, and refer them to the relevant Government or non- Government support organization such as the BDF Mental Health team, GOB employee Assistance Program, Community Rehabilitation Department, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Women’s Department, NDACC, legal Aid, Our Circle, and others,” the BDF said.
