By Aaron Humes: Before the new Budget is presented and debated, the House of Representatives will be asked to pass a fourth Supplementary Appropriation Bill for the current fiscal year.

Prime Minister John Briceño noted that the Bill contains an Appropriation of $1.5 million, the payment agreed on with the Christian Workers Union (CWU), and which funds have at least in part been already distributed to stevedores.

The P.M. discussed the ongoing impasse between the CWU and Port of Belize Limited and concluded that the urgent and unforeseen expense will assist the CWU in helping to resolve its difficulties with the Port and continue work in order to ensure that the essential service of the Port continues.

The Prime Minister also condemned those who he said have tried to cast aspersions on the payment and pointed out that the Government and Union have publicly agreed on the way forward to resolving the various disputes of the Union and Port.

Representatives of the Port have challenged the payment in court on the very basis by which it is being brought to the National Assembly today. That matter is being heard tomorrow but may be headed off if the Bill is passed through all its stages as expected.
