Leader of the Opposition: Budget reading was “more of the same”

Posted: Tuesday, March 15, 2022. 3:42 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As he prepares for his first Budget Debate as Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow dismissed the near two-hour presentation of Prime Minister John Briceño as “more of the same.”

Claiming to have needed coffee to have stayed awake, Barrow said the Budget did not do enough to address the current plight of a population being freshly battered by the twin storms of COVID-19 and rising fuel and food prices as a result of the war in Ukraine and freezing out of Russia.

Barrow argued that restoring Belize’s economic growth to at or near pre-pandemic levels isn’t the same as reaching new heights.

And he renewed his complaint that the Opposition needed more time to go through the details of the cumbersome printed Budget Book, suggesting that “a month” might be just enough and calling for upset of the tradition surrounding the presentation.

More on this later.
