Mexican President to visit Belize as part of upcoming regional tour

By Benjamin Flowers: President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is planning on visiting Belize as part of an upcoming regional tour of Central America.

On Friday, March 11, President Lopez Obrador announced his tour set to begin in May, and the stops that he will make.

His itinerary includes El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, though he did not get into specifics as to how long he would spend in each country.

He also noted that he will be visiting Cuba on the tour.

Lopez Obrador, Mexico’s 65th president, has already done three foreign diplomatic visits since being elected in 2018; however they were all to the United States.

Mexico and Belize have had friendly diplomatic relations since 1981, and are both members of a number of regional bodies including Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Central American Integration System (SICA for its acronym in Spanish).

Belize and Mexico are also trading partners for several commodities, including cattle, with several shipments of cattle headed into Mexico this year alone.
