Police deny United Democratic Party’s request for permit to picket today’s House Meeting

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department has denied the opposition United Democratic Party’s request for a permit to picket outside of the National Assembly during today’s meeting of the House of Representatives.

In a letter addressed to Deputy Party Chairman, Alberto August, the Acting Officer Commanding the Belmopan Police Formation, ASP Elroy Carcamo, explained that picketing is not allowed under the Statutory Instrument addressing the spread of COVID-19.

Following the denial of the permit, August took to social media to express his discontent with the department and the government itself, alleging that the denial is an attempt to make the opposition appear weak.

“The next protest promises to be bigger as the UDP sorts out its leadership challenge on March 27, the unions intensify their opposition to government-supported Ashcroft alliance against the Union, the churches organize against the marijuana bill, the bus operators continue to take a licking, as the cost of living, fuel prices, and crime continue to go up while government presents a mean budget devoid of a social conscience,” August said.
