BSI recognizes women cane farmers

Posted: Wednesday, March 16, 2022. 11:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Lest anyone think that cane farming is a male-dominated profession, Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) took the time to recognize its female partners by offering a tour of the factory.

According to BSI/ASR, some 2,041 women are cane farmers (41 percent of the cañero population), and 17 women lead cane harvesting groups or 6.5 percent).

The millers are encouraging women farmers to sign up by private message with name, farmer ID, and phone number to schedule a visit to Tower Hill apart from delivering cane.

In this Women’s Month, BSI says, it is doing its part to #BreakTheBias by shining a light on women cane farmers who service the factory about as well as the men do.
