Man charged for stealing over $22,000 worth of jewelry from Medina’s House of Jewelry- finds old charge waiting for him in court

Posted: Wednesday, March 16, 2022. 7:59 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Tonight the man believed to be responsible for stealing more than $22,000 worth of Medina’s House of Jewelry on Orange Street, Belize City had to answer to a previously unaddressed charge for violating the COVID-19 prevention regulations.

Belize City resident, 48-year-old Raymond Anthony Montes, was arraigned in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, but before he could answer to a charge of burglary, he found that a charge for breach of curfew picked up back in November 2021, was pending before the court. His court records show that he never showed up for his arraignment with respect to that charge.

Montes wasted no time in pleading guilty to the curfew violation, but was told since he took this long to pay for an offense for which he had 15 days grace period to pay, his fine was $705, rather than the minimum of $500. He has until July 31, 2022, to pay or will face three months in jail for default.

With his curfew charge out of the way, he was read a single count of burglary to which he pleaded not guilty. He was granted bail in the sum of $5,000 plus two sureties of $2,500 each of which he met.

The allegation against him is that between Sunday, March 13, 2022 and Monday, March 14, 2022 he entered as a trespasser the business place of Medina’s House of Jewelry located at #1 Orange Street, Belize City and stole a variety of jewelry totaling to $22, 815.00 property of Ethan Medina.
