Prime Minister John Briceño meets with stakeholders to discuss impacts of gas prices

Posted: Wednesday, March 16, 2022. 1:20 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The price of gas has been a topic of discussion with constantly rising prices, bus companies threatening to strike, and the Government of Belize no longer informing the public when to expect the next price increase. Today, Prime Minister John Briceño is holding a meeting to discuss the impacts of the rising cost of fuel.

Briceno and government representatives are meeting with social partners and stakeholders where discussions will be centered around ideas to alleviate the impacts of the rising cost of fuel and to find a way forward with the global challenges affecting those costs.

Briceño revealed yesterday that, though the cost of diesel fuel is now above $13 a gallon, government recently absorbed up to $400,000 in the latest increase, to keep the price from going any higher.

Briceno also stressed yesterday that the fuel situation unfolding in Belize is currently beyond government’s control given the effect the Russian invasion of Ukraine is having globally.
