Government meets with National Garifuna Council under Multi-Annual Indicative Programme (MIP)

Posted: Thursday, March 17, 2022. 9:26 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The first meetings with stakeholders by the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development began today in Dangriga Town.

The National Garifuna Council (NGC) hosted CEO Valentino Shal and the Government team and discussed the challenges and experiences they have faced, as well as their objectives for fostering green growth and sustainable socioeconomic development.

In February, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Belize Marianne Van Steen and Prime Minister John Briceño announced plans by the EU to deliver $38.6 million in the first instance in funds under the six-year Belize Multi-annual Indicative Programme (MIP) for the period 2021 to 2027. The programme is designed to advance the activities of the Government of Belize in alleviating rural poverty in Belize. This first allocation may be increased after a mid-term review in 2024.

The funding will see implementation of this project in Belize’s southern districts. As a result, the Ministries are engaging with various stakeholders to guide the development of a framework plan to execute the concepts and funds as they relate to the program’s priority areas. Those are the promotion of green growth, sustainable socio-economic development, and trade and integration.
