By Aaron Humes: Belize Bank Limited’s E-kyash electronic payment solution will be piloted for online payments for the processing of temporary work permit applications to the Labour Department.

The Bank beat out bids from the National Bank of Belize, Heritage Bank Limited, Speednet (Smart) and Digi submitted under the Supporting Electronic Payment Solutions Project.

Launched last August and being used by more than 40 thousand, the Bank boasts several key features of the new currency: person-to-person transfers; QR code payments at merchant locations for free; bill payments to more than 70 entities which you can save for future ease; payment of salary to create efficiency and savings; geo-location, quickly finding nearest merchants and retail operators to buy at over 1,500 businesses; and English and Spanish versions of consumer and business applications.

Employers applying for work permits for staff will now be able to pay online and securely, making the application process more efficient and immediate, avoiding delays or disruptions.

A Government statement says, “The integration of digital payments builds on Government’s commitment to achieving our digital transformation by providing efficient end-to-end digital government services. This will improve the government’s service delivery and support the ease of doing business in Belize.” The initiative is being led by the E-Governance and Digitalization Unit under the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics & E-Governance, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government.

The new service is scheduled to go live at the end of April 2022.
