The National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL) championship has not started and already one of the second division teams dropped out. Today the Football Federation of Belize said the Juventus Sugar Girls have withdrawn from the championship and sent out a new calendar.

It means that Division 1 will have five teams and Division 2 will have five teams as well.

The FFB is calling them groups, but they are indeed divisions. Divisions are at different levels and groups are at the same level. Since the lowest placed team from the top division will be relegated and the lower division champion will be promoted, in effect the FFB is now moving up to international standards. Something that is not yet being done in the men’s ranks.

Unfortunately, with the Orange Walk-side pulling out, it means that a team in both divisions will be inactive every weekend. The FFB should really aim at splitting the ten into even numbers: either six at the top and four at the bottom or four at the top and six at the bottom.

That way, all teams would play every week. It might be late, but there is still time.

For now, the revamped schedule remains the same with the Juventus Girls games being removed. Meaning the Cayo Dreamers, who would have played the Juventus Girls on Saturday in Cayo, will rest this weekend.

National champs Jewel Fury, who head Division 1, will take on the Sagitun Girlz at 3:00 pm at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence on Saturday.

In the other Division 1 game on Saturday, the San Pedro Pirates will take on the Verdes Rebels at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.

National Subchampions Rumberas will not play this weekend.

In Division 2, Corozal’s Bay City will visit Wagiya at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga on Saturday, while the Santa Elena Strikers will play the Corozal United Warriors on Sunday at the Norman Broaster in San Ignacio.

All games will play at 3:00 pm.

The Football Federation of Belize said the 10 participating clubs were divided into two divisions based on the standings from the previous season which finished in December.

The FFB said the tournament will be played in a round robin format which will produce a winner from each division. The winner of Division B will be promoted to Division A for the closing season and the club with the least points from Division will be relegated to Division B.
