By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mayan sites Caracol and Cahal Pech in the Cayo District will be closed from Saturday to Monday for Prince William and his wife Kate, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to visit during their tour to Belize.

Prince William and his wife Kate are visiting three countries in the Caribbean to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on March 19. The Duke’s office announced that while in Belize, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit sites that celebrate Maya and Garifuna cultures, and explore Belize’s biodiversity.

The Institute of Archaeology at the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) said the Caracol Archaeological Reserve and Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve will be temporarily closed from Saturday,
March 19, to Monday, March 21.

The two sites will reopen to the public on Tuesday, March 22.

“This closure is to facilitate the use of both archaeological reserves during the upcoming royal visit to Belize,” said NICH in a press release.

“The National Institute of Culture and History regrets any inconvenience caused and looks forward to improving the visitor’s experience at all archaeological reserves.”

NICH said the Cahal Visitors Center will be open in the morning for the sale of tickets to the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Caves only.
